South Korea scored the winning goal in stoppage time after calmly withstanding Nigeria’s onslaught in the first 90 minutes.
In the fifth minute of the first overtime, Choi Seok-hyun (Dankook University) redirected a corner kick from Lee Seung-won (Gangwon) to rattle the Nigerian net.
It was Choi’s second goal in as many games, following his goal against Ecuador in the Round of 16. Lee Seung-won recorded his fourth assist of the tournament.
It was the second consecutive quarterfinal appearance for South Korea, who finished as runners-up at the previous tournament in Poland in 2019, their best-ever finish.
This is the fifth time South Korean men’s soccer has reached the quarterfinals of a FIFA-organized tournament, including the 1983 and 2019 editions, the 2002 Korea-Japan World Cup and the 2012 London Olympics.
To reach the final, South Korea will need to defeat Italy.
The Italians beat Colombia 3-1 in the quarterfinals to reach the last four.
