They will face Italy on their way to the final.

Kim Eun-jung’s U-20 team defeated Nigeria 1-0 in extra time in the quarterfinals of the FIFA U-20 World Cup 2023 at the Santiago del Estero Stadium in Argentina on Friday (June 5).

South Korea scored the winning goal in stoppage time after calmly withstanding Nigeria’s onslaught in the first 90 minutes.

In the fifth minute of the first overtime, Choi Seok-hyun (Dankook University) redirected a corner kick from Lee Seung-won (Gangwon) to rattle the Nigerian net.

It was Choi’s second goal in as many games, following his goal against Ecuador in the Round of 16. Lee Seung-won recorded his fourth assist of the tournament.

It was the second consecutive quarterfinal appearance for South Korea, who finished as runners-up at the previous tournament in Poland in 2019, their best-ever finish.

This is the fifth time South Korean men’s soccer has reached the quarterfinals of a FIFA-organized tournament, including the 1983 and 2019 editions, the 2002 Korea-Japan World Cup and the 2012 London Olympics.

To reach the final, South Korea will need to defeat Italy.

The Italians beat Colombia 3-1 in the quarterfinals to reach the last four.

Forward Cesare Cassaday is the number one player to watch. Cassaday leads the Azzurri in scoring with six goals, more than half of Italy’s 11 goals in the tournament.메이저놀이터
